Briord is not only an old estate to be restored. It is a place that calls, laden with history, memory and silence. Since 2021, one conviction has guided every gesture: Restore, Preserve and SHARE.
Some places are not possessed: they seize you. Briord is one of these. At the heart of the Pays de Retz, between the Loire and the Atlantic, this estate bears several centuries of lives, of labour and of silence. Since 2021, on discovering it, I understood that it was not a matter of buying an old dwelling, but of answering a call — that of a land laden with memory that was waiting to be set back on its feet.
Very quickly, Briord became a cause. A heritage, cultural, human, and almost spiritual cause.
Restore, preserve, share
Three words sum up the whole project. To restore a place to its history, by repairing what time and oblivion had damaged. To preserve what can still be preserved — the walls of the château, the forest, the chapel, the gardens, but also the stories and the names of those who made this estate. To share, finally, for a heritage kept closed dies. Briord is not a closed estate: it is a living heritage, open, explained, inhabited, offered to the greatest number.
One does not raise up such a place alone. Around Briord have gathered the Volontaires de Charette, a community of volunteers engaged in the life of the estate: the works, the visits, the welcoming of the public, the transmission of history. With them, it is no longer only stones that are restored, but a memory that is set back on its feet; it is no longer only buildings that are saved, but a bond recreated between a territory, its history and those who come to discover it.
So that Briord does not depend on a single will, I created the Eric Peters Fund for the Preservation of Heritage. This endowment fund gives the estate a lasting structure, capable of carrying its restoration, its opening to the public and its vocation of transmission far beyond the present years. It is the guarantee that the work continues.
To build a company, to restore a château, to save a chapel, to pass on a history: all this proceeds from one and the same movement. Not to let be lost what deserves to be preserved, and to turn a personal success into a collective adventure. That, at bottom, is the true philosophy of Briord — to make of a beloved place a living heritage, to be passed on to those who come after us.
